Are We Safe From Data Mining?

What Is Data Mining?

Data Mining Is the act of searching Big Data through superior research and figuring out the patterns and the outcomes of the future.

Exploring and gleaning out the large amounts of information by researchers can be used in a variety of ways, like finding out what customers' emotions mean, what can be the preferences of their future, how can it be used for higher profits, etc.

Today, Data Mining is used to analyze patterns used by a variety of businesses to reach the highest pedestal.

For example, A bookshop looking to increase its growth will analyze the behavior of the customers visiting them daily. They will study which book are customers picking up the most,  if they are gravitating towards the Young Adult section more on the weekends, then they will give that section high priority and stock it more. The owners/managers will also classify the moods, age, and days according to customers' preferences because this will make the owners realize what books are selling the most and they will shelve more books of that genre from next time.

Overall Data Mining depends on Data Gathering from various sources and segregating information according to the customer's behavior.

How It Can Be Dangerous?

Many businesses like small grocery stores to high-end tech supports use Data Mining techniques but how is this dangerous you may think.

It is the “unethical” way by which the Data Mining practices are done behind our backs. Because true public opinion cannot simply be determined by viewing a group of customers visiting your store. And these are some of the things that raise the concerns of users' privacy and information, and that is why larger companies doing Data Mining has become a consistent issue.

The issue really picked up the fire when the Cambridge Analytica Facebook scandal came into the light. Millions of people's personal data were given to Facebook for political purposes, without their consent by British Intelligence company Cambridge Analytica. The user's data were collected through the app called "This Is Your Digital Life", where they were asked personal queries about them and their Facebook friends.

From those time onwards, Data Mining has become a word that arise suspicion among people. Today Companies have to choose if they want to become transparent or choose to glean data behind our backs. If they give their priority to customers then they have to go the extra mile and warn their customers about ethical data mining doings of their company.

Lastly, an increase in the transparency of the services/products and building respect among customers can be possible only by conducting ethical means of Data Mining practices.

Now more than ever we have gained access to virtual living. We must make sure that no unethical means can take up our personal information from the sources. Impossible to keep an eye on every online intruder but we can at least put some locks to prevent these situations like theft.
